Hard Fall

The St. Louis Mavericks are having the best season in team history. On pace for a pro hockey record, the unexpected death of their captain and star player knocks them off course in ways they never expected.
My world was turned upside down the day Ben Whitmer died. Best friends since junior hockey, Ben was like a brother to me. My voice of reason and a grounding force on and off the ice. But as heartbroken as I am, I don’t have the luxury of grieving his loss.

Not only do I have to hold our team together, I was named guardian of the two young children Ben and his wife left behind. Well, not just me—me and his wife’s best friend, Hadley. We’ve been left with the impossible task of deciding which of us will raise the kids, but there’s no way I’m letting that uptight ball buster have them.

Lines are drawn, but they begin to blur as I find out there’s more to Hadley than I thought. A lot more.
I can’t take the place of my beautiful best friend in her children’s lives. But I love them so fiercely that I’ll do whatever it takes to raise them the way their parents wanted.

Wes Kirby is an obnoxious womanizer, and I won’t let him take Ben and Lauren’s children from me. Deciding to temporarily live together in our friends’ home, we attempt to provide the kids stability while we figure out which of us is better suited to raising them.

As we learn parenthood together, my enemy Wes slowly becomes something different. Something more. And I’m left wondering not only if I’m enough for the kids, but if Wes and I are enough to last.

Brenda Rothert & Kat Mizera - Hard Fall Book Reviews

Like a spicy netflix dramedy in book form! All the “Life As We Know It” vibes! A beautiful story about starting over in the way you least expect it. I fell for all the characters in this book and really loved how close they all were. Wes and Hadley’s story really proves that friends are the family you choose. Reading about these two weaving through the intricacies of parenting while learning to support and respect one another in the process was all sorts of swoon-worthy. I really enjoyed how their relationship progressed and they grew as individuals, a couple, and parents. The portrayal of the grief Hadley and Wes go through is so real and heart wrenching. Awesome first book in what I’m sure will be a great series! *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review..Score: 5/5

5 Stars of Perfection!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s ReadHadley and Wes’s coming together sorry is filled with so much emotion. These two go thru so much together and they find each other through everything they wether together. There was definitely some hate going on in the beginning but it really made them that much better together. The co-writing of Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothart is simply genius and I totally feel that everyone should experience this story..Score: 5/5

New hockey series!I love Brenda Rothert’s work, but I’m new to Kat Mizera, so this was a good way to get the best of both worlds. A sad start that turns into so much more, Wes and Hadley go from despising each other to coming together to raise their best friends kids. Soon opinions change, along with a lot of other things. I loved this and look forward to this series!.Score: 5/5

OutstandingWhere do I start? What a fantastic start to St Louise Mavericks, in what I fully expect to be a winning series. Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera are authors I have read and loved individually Together these two wrote a phenomenal story that drew me in and held me captive from the first word to the last. The story and characters were engaging and I found myself drawn to the story that they wove about Weston (Wes) Kirby and Hadley Ellis. Wes and Ben Whitmer were best friends as were Hadley and Lauren, until tragedy struck. Suddenly, Wes finds himself joint guardian with Hadley to their children with no time to grieve. This was an emotional story that tugged at my heart strings and pulled out so man emotions whilst I was reading. Hadley and Wes have always tolerated one another because their best friends were married to one another but now they will have to pull together to offer support and comfort and a stable life to Annalise and Benny. You could feel their pain as both Wes and Hadley struggled with their grief whilst trying to do what was best for the children as well as having to contend with the attraction that develops between them. There were moments where I was brought to tears and moments were I smiled like a lunatic. The camaraderie and support that his fellow players offered to them also added an additional layer to my enjoyment of the story. The writing was strong and I have no idea who wrote what or where one author stopped and the other took over, such was the seamlessness of their writing. From start to finish Ms. Rothert and Ms. Mizera wove together a story that I simply could not put down..Score: 5/5

All the feelsWow!!! What a fantastic start to the new St Louis Mavericks Series by Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera. I love both of these authors individually but together they took my reading enjoyment to another level, a sure sigh of a dynamic writing duo is not knowing who wrote what, where one author finishes and the next one starts and I have no idea who wrote what in Weston and Hadley’s emotional journey. Wes and Hadley know each other well after all their best friends are married to each other and they are both godparents to their children but this doesn’t mean they have to get along, in fact whenever these two are in the room temperatures drop and the atmosphere becomes decidedly icy. When a terrible accident leaves Wes and Hadley having to work together to make sure their godchildren have stability, they both decide to move into the only home the children have ever known, put their differences aside and try and works out who is best suited to raise baby Benny and four year old Annalise and living under the same roof means an emotional roller coaster ride is about to begin. I’m not going to tell you anymore of this story because I believe you need to read this emotional journey with no preconceived ideas, but I will tell you this is a must read for all romance lovers. Hard Fall touched me on so many levels, I smiled, I swooned, I sighed and I cried as I fell hook, line and sinker for Wes, Hadley and the rest of the St Louis Mavericks. You know you are reading a very special book when you know the story and the characters are staying with you long after the final word has been read and that is Hard Fall. I highly recommend this book to all sports lovers and all romance lovers, if you love stories where children steal the show with classic one liners look no further than this wonderful, gem of a read. Wes and Annalise stole a piece of my heart but Wes and Hadley blew me away, can’t wait for the next player to get his story..Score: 5/5
