Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in this electrifying #1 New York Times-bestseller from C. J. Box.
Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes--these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.
At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he's become Nate's advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he'd imagined.

I found the “Pickett” novels about six months ago. I was between books of several authors I read every year and looking for someone new. I was hooked in the first few chapters of Open Season. In that short space of time I have binge-read the remaining Box novels including The Disappeared. I’m captivated the character development of Joe, Nate, Marybeth, Sheridan and the rest as the mature and are weaved into these stories. Box’s lush and descriptive words about Wyoming and the West make me long for an opportunity to explore that area and experience for myself. Keep up the great work CJ, I can hardly wait to see where we go next! 55
Well done! A good read. 45
Box depicts Wyoming and his cast of characters with raw precision. 55
Plot had potential. But, too many caricatures rather than real characters. 25
Terrible.. No conclusion. Never again 15
Good read 55
As with all CJ Box’s Joe Pickett books this one is tops. One of his best. I’d love to see movies made or even a television series. Can’t wait for the next one. Read one and you’re hooked. If you don’t read them, things could get real western real quick. Nate Romanowski might come calling ! 55
I'm disappointed that ending leaves us hanging and waiting for part two. Great read and story I thought but I hate when these good authors charge so much for ebook I can't even share and is only part one of an unfinished story. Now I need to wait a year for sequel and pay even more 35
Slow, plodding, contrived.... some of the plot elements are getting repeated way too often... 35
This is one of the really good ones. Fun plot. Great characters. Genuinely superb fiction. 55
