Becoming

An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Just conceited/narcissistic talk about herself. 15

Excellent and Inspiring5 star

Not too surprised on the unwarranted hatred and vitriol in the reviews section from people who likely did not read the book. This is an excellent and candid reflection of the former FLOTUS on her life and upbringing and she does a fantastic job of weaving how she overcame obstacles in her youth to when she in her political position within the White House. I will likely revisit this book often! I highly recommend the audiobook as it is narrated by her! 55

So Proud of My First Lady! Yaaassss!5 star

Excellent read! I enjoyed reading every word from this dynamic first lady’s memoir! I feel like it drew me closer to her, President Obama, her daughters and other family members! I am proud to say that having followed President Obama’s first and second Presidency, I was well acquainted with specific accounts that the First Lady documented, and was able to fact check them all! Looking forward to her next book as well as President Obama’s! Michelle, you did your thang girl! 55

A clear eyed look into the life of Michelle Robinson Obama. Her struggles were not overly victimized yet you get a glimpse into what it must feel like to be a person of color. As her life moves forward and she matured, you also can feel both her joys and sorrows and her guilt in some life choices. I had no real idea on how confining being the First Lady could be even after President Obama completed his terms in office. Peeks into the mind of President Obama were also enlightening. Despite the length of the book, all the story of this compelling woman was an important read. 55

Mrs. Obama is an intelligent, beautiful, inspiring lady that has class. Her book is amazing! She opens up and puts herself in a vulnerable position, inspiring all of us to share our own stories of the person we’re becoming. Mrs. Obama, when will you “be-coming” back to the White House!? 💙 55

I really enjoyed reading Becoming4 star

I just finished Becoming and I really liked it. I was moved by Michelle’s childhood and her parents and the life of poor Black community in South Chicago. I liked how she described her struggles with Barack and finding a purpose for her life. She unveiled another area I have no knowledge of: life in the White House. It is very personal, humane and still I could relate to a lot (working mom at least 😊). 45
