An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER
In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.
Becoming may refer to: Becoming (philosophy), the dynamic aspect of being, in philosophical ontology Becoming, the condition for continued rebirth, according to Buddhism Becoming, a term used for potentiality..
Open doors to diversity so that we can stop assuming but knowing one another. We love drama and characters in America so be bold and be yourself and share your authentic self not someone’s else’s judgement. Becoming is powerful and inspiring. 55
I sampled it, and I’m hooked. Amazing work! Such great writing! 55
A unique perspective from an inspirational woman. 55
You instantly fall in love with the woman that we’ve all come to know. From her upbringing in Chicago, to her many academic achievements, and of course to being one of the most prolific African Americans in our history, it goes to not only tell minorities but those who face the challenges of everyday that you can in fact ease up off the wheel and let life take you to where your heart really desires. 55
Really awful 15
I love her and I love this book! It’s a great read from start to finish. 55
Exceptional. She opened up on everything, I felt every word. 55
I felt connected with the former First Lady from many aspects: try to prove oneself through education and hard work since very young age, dedicate and determine to stick with the motion of moving format all time, appreciate the value of family, never take anything for granted, and last but not least: we both went to bed early on the 2016 election night. 55
Eye opening. Sweet. Authentic. 55
Honest, emotional, authentic. 55
I absolutely LOVE this book and now love Michelle and Barack even more. Thank you for writing this! 55
Started reading this to distract myself from a mountain of creative tasks. It provided a perspective that allows you to feel comfort in the world, if only for a few hundred pages 55
Not unlike the woman herself, Michelle Obama’s story is eloquently told and beautifully written. She’s an inspiration to all humankind. The world is a better place for having had her in it and we are lucky to have heard her message. 55
Great story. Well presented but a bit redundant. A refreshing look into the concept of appearing different and believing that internal roots, support, and reinforcement of who we can become is a journey with two steps forward and sometimes one step back. The point is that anything is doable with perseverance and self examination. Above all, the drive to feel that “We can and eventually we will. Finally, The dictionary is the only text that the word success precedes the word work” 45
Worth every penny 55
Not worth the purchase 15
Beautifully written and so deeply honest. Loved it. 55
Beautiful story and eloquently written with the perfect amount of sarcasm and wit. The honest raw narrative rings sincere and proud. I enjoyed learning about her formative years and the relationship she and her husband shared prior to his political career. Their commitment and investment to one another and their family is apparent and evident when he decides to pursue his political endeavors and while Michelle hadn’t chosen the public forum she was thrown upon she certainly handled herself and any adversity they faced with the grace of a woman, pride of a mother and endless love of a wife. Great story! Two remarkable people who have gotten the values of family, marriage and faith right every chance they had. 55
