From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction
“Unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid, Matthew McConaughey’s book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did—and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand.”—Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.
Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”
So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.
Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.
It’s a love letter. To life.
It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.
To green-light is to give permission to move forward with a project. The term is a reference to the green traffic signal, indicating "go ahead"...
May not be for everyone, but Matt imparts a tone of wisdom and gives insight to soul searching and finding one’s true self in this book. Keep up the journey Matthew! 55
I’ve always loved Matt’s work as an actor. I caught him in Joe Rogan’s podcast and really enjoyed his outlooks and advice to livin. So much so, I got a chill or two every now and then. I asked for this book for my birthday and was dying to finish my current read to get to this one. Pleasantly surprised at how Matt brings his experiences and thoughts together in this. I think I might start journaling... 55
Incredibly inspiring. Funny, charming and insightful. I plan to read once a year to remind me of the lessons it imparts. 55
Ive heard several of the authors speeches and the book, mirrors those speeches in more depth. I recommend this book. Entertaining and insightful. 55
A very heartfelt and real life story told in a unusually fresh way. His writing is interesting to read and beautifully presented! No wonder it has been on the bestseller list for so long. I am glad I read it. Congratulations Matthew you done good!!! 55
I’ve always respected him as an actor, but wow, after reading this book I’ll never see him the same again. Such a beautiful life he’s lived and continues to live, such an incredible writer with amazing perspectives. Highly recommend this week. Definitely a great read to start off 2021. 55
This book was amazing! So many great insights. Very captivating. Made me cry. Lol went to the post office as soon as I was finished to mail to my sister ! It couldn’t wait ! This is a must read. Love his philosophy on this life. 55
This memoir/autobiography can also be classified as a self-care book. I never thought that I would strive to follow the ways of Matthew McConaughey. The optimism and an absolutely genuine personality written out right in front of me was too good to look away from. Matthew shows his goals and successes while also showing the flaws and failures. Keeping it honest and simple. Amazing! 55
Matthew is like an onion, so many layers, what a exciting life. Great read. Think I will get it in audio as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and life with us 55
This book was amazing, having him read it himself was the cherry on top. It was so natural and graceful. A lot can be learned from this man, his moral compass is extraordinary. 55
A in-depth view of this awesome actor. Very inspiring. 45
Another so so actor thinks he is so wonderful he has to write a bio. 35
Great reading 55
I have loved everything about McConaughey since Dazed and Confused came out my Junior year of high school. A Texas man myself, it’s just awesome to read and envision his life in places I know so well! You can’t help but feel proud of him. It’s hard to put the book down once you start reading. You’ll wanna see what comes next. Some things just seem unreal but hey, everything is bigger in Texas! Oh and good luck not imagining his distinctive Texas accent while reading! I might purchase the audio book just to get the whole experience. 55
Smart, funny, sincere, loved it, enjoyed it! The real deal 55
A lot of gems on how to deal with certain roadblocks. Read, re-read so you can see past the words and find more ways than one to get through whatever it is that’s stopping you 55
This book is a great read. Very down to earth. I felt like I was at a coffee shop and he was sharing his life, his thoughts, his philosophy on life. 55
Prepare to be as satisfied with this book. I promise you will laugh a lot and you will learn something. 55
The absolute best! 55
