In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Absolutely Amazing5 star

Never watched the movie but I hear it only covered a third of the book. This story was always a pleasure to read and made me laugh, smile, and cried. This book had everything from an Olympic hero to a war story, to being lost at sea, in a POW camp, and a life destroyed by alcoholism. If you need something that will make you feel emotions, this book is definitely it. Maybe one of the best books I have ever read and it makes it better that it’s all true. 55

This should be required reading for all American citizens so that they may appreciate what so few have sacrificed for so many. 55

This was very good4 star

The only reason for the 4 stars is that it was somewhat like trying to drink from a fire hose. The information kept coming and coming without a break and sometimes repeated. It was an amazing story though and I can't even imagine living through it. This should be required reading for all high school kids who think war is all glory. 45

THE BEST BOOK EVER!5 star

I love this book and I don't read war books usually. I mean this author kept me glued to the page even though it was just beatings at one point. Now that's good writing. 55

Excellent Read!5 star

Before I was halfway through this book I told someone that I thought this book should be required reading in high schools. This book describes an era that no one in this generation could possibly understand. We live in such a different time. Being born in 1960 and having relatives who were in WWll, I had a very small understanding of this time in history regarding Japan. This is an amazing story and I will read again just so I can absorb more. The first time reading this is emotionally overwhelming. I am forever grateful to the WWll vets who sacrificed their lives. 55

Wow. The story of Louie Zamperini's life is astounding. What an incredible life he has lived. The book is well researched and well written. This author has earned my respect. I wished I have read this book before my trip to Japan last year. The history of war and reconciliation between the U.S. and Japan would have added a different dimension to my visit. I read the sample version also for young readers (with a mind to recommend to my kids). The adult version is so much better. I will recommend the adult version to my young adult kids instead. I highly recommend this book. I plan to watch the movie version as well. 55

Book is Unbeatable5 star

I join the many thousands of reviewers who think this is a tremendous book. The author is really good at putting together a complex story and cutting through to the heart of the matter. This isn't really a story of a thrilling survival--against all odds, etc. It is about human ability to rise above anything. Of course Zamperini was exceptional in many ways, but what he did with what he was dealt and what he did with his life after returning from the horrors of WWII POW camps in Japan is truly inspirational. 55

I loved this book so much. The best and saddest book I ever read. Awesome read! I learned so much from it. It's educational and interesting at the same time. True story...so touching. I wish I could meet Louis. He died right before the Unbroken film came out. So sad. RIP Louis YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED. Do yourself a favor and read this book. The movie is great ❤️ 55
