A hilarious and heartwarming New York Times bestselling novel—now a major motion picture!
“This 48-karat beach read is crazy fun.” —Entertainment Weekly
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.
On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

A good, quick read that can take maybe a day to get through if you are a fast reader. Simple dialogue and quirky romance that makes it the perfect beach day book! Would definitely recommend this book to a friend. 55
Really nice book to read a bit mindlessly. Keep reading til the end that’s when it gets good. Overall I’d recommend it. 55
If you are looking for a story about a couple falling in love and fighting for it, this is not it. I think the last couple of chapters were the most interesting, but it is still anticlimactic with no real point to the book. I chose not to read on to the next book. It was not to my taste at least. 25
This book was amazing!! Highly recommend it! 55

I don't have a problem with the book being light and airy. The writing is a bit stilted, but that doesn't bother me, either. I didn't buy it because I thought it was going to be a retelling of Genghis Khan as told to Shakespeare. I was looking for a frothy read, and I found it. What DOES bother me is that the footnotes are placed at the END of each chapter, not on the same page as the words or phrases they elucidate. The elucidations do me no good at all! If the footnotes MUST be placed at the end, maybe it would be better to at least repeat the word or phrase in question to remind the reader which one it is?! 35
I read this because my book club selected it, but I can’t believe they’ve made a movie out of this? Nothing unique or original. A bad soap opera only more trite, shallow and predictable! 15
Loved better than the movie. But the movie is phenomenal! 55
Fun read 55
This book was very entertaining and hilariously funny and good. 55

Less than the shadow one star would make sliding off my Kindle screen as it collapsed into a puddle of tears over the loss of precious moments spent on it. Really not amusing Barely one dimensional characters And a nauseatingly "happy" ending 15
Not going to win a literary award but will fly off the bookshelves. Such an easy book to read when you need to escape the entanglements of the world today. A great way to understand bits and pieces of Singapore culture and nuances. It also reminds me that happiness does not come from any goods purchased but in the compassionate humans we bring into our life. That is our most valuable treasure. 45
Fun and funny! 45
Hard to put down, as the book weaves between story lines you grow to love the characters. I chuckled, laughed and grew attached to the families. I did not want the book to end!!! 55
This book was long and very soap opera like with subtle humor. The descriptions of the wealth of the characters was over done. The ending was bad. Very abrupt resolution leaving too many unresolved story lines. It was described as a comedy but it wasn't that funny. Maybe because I am not Asian I just do t get it. I wasted my time reading this. I'm very disappointed with the end. 25
I could not put this book down. It was fantastic. I cannot wait to see this made into a movie!!! 55
skip the gossip mags and read this book during your beach bum days!!! hope there will be a great follow from Kwan. 55
The literature and quality of writing is awful and the descriptions are too extravagant. I understand that the story is supposed to be extreme but the details are in the way of the story if there even is a story. Although there are glaring mistakes in the book, it is a rather intriguing book. The cultural aspects are on point and the lives are well put together. My largest issue is that I don't really establish a relationship with the characters. I finished the book not really knowing the reasons of all their decisions or sympathizing with them. Overall the book could have been better had the writing been better. 25
Great summer read, loved the cultural context, reminded me of some of the quirks in my own culture. 55
